Bwelle here, at CNN Heroes of 2013! more information about my trip can be found on the "Cameroon" page of This summer alone, we will see over 2,000 patients and not only attempt to treat their current ailments but provide preventive care and education that will endure even after we leave. Bwelle and his group in setting up a makeshift "hospital" to provide personal consultations, prescribe treatments and perform necessary surgeries. Upon arriving in the villages, my classmates and I will assist Dr. Bwelle's (ASCOVIME) reach out to these communities and help provide the medical support they desperately need. Even government funded vaccinations and medications reach few rural communities due to the lack of transportation infrastructure. With no medical insurance and a pay-as-you-go system, few citizens are actually able to afford health care. Access to healthcare in Cameroon is unfortunately very limited and primarily focused in urban areas.
